When Cityscapes first opened for business, we only specialized in urban gardens. Over the years we have expanded our services to include suburban and country properties. In addition to our horticulural knowledge of landscapes, we have a keen understanding of the various and unique conditions present in the urban garden. We specialize in gardens often found in cities such as rooftops, balconies and terraces, courtyards, patios, tree boxes and street fronts. We also work on large residential properties as well as commercial jobs - parks, schools, churches and small office buildings.
Our mission is to provide our clients with top quality workmanship and materials while creating enduring landscapes. We seek long-term solutions that will support our clients and their landscapes while remaining committed to using correct horticultural methods that are environmentally sound. We listen attentively to our clients in order to develop solutions which addresses our clients' landscape wants and needs. We are flexible in responding to our clients’ ever-changing and developing gardens.
Several of our gardens have been featured on the Georgetown Garden Day tour and in the book "Gardens of Georgetown, Exploring Urban Treasures" by Edith Nalle Schafer. We have been in the following publications: Garden Design, Home and Design, and The Garden Club of America Bulletin.
Cityscapes Landscaping strives to build community partnerships and lasting relationships with clients and the community. We at Cityscapes believe in giving back to the community through volunteer work and financial support to local and national organizations.
The owner, Joan Marie Janssen, is also the designer. Joan has been in the landscape/garden and horticulture profession for over 40 years and she has been an advid gardener since childhood. Gardening is Joan's life-long passion! Previously, she has worked for the National Arboreetum as a currator's assistant, the Smithsonian as a gardener, as horticulture assistant for an interior plantscaping company and as supervisor for the maintenance department of a large landscape company. Joan is a member of APLD (Association of Professional Landscape Designers) since 1988. APLD is an organization dedicated to protecting the integrity of the landscape design profession, requiring high standards of practice for its members in the delivery of landscape design services. Joan obtained her professional knowledge from Montgomery College and George Washington University, as well as drawing upon her extensive library of horticultural landscape and garden books.
